Pay, Training and Real Progression: What Being a PA with HomeCare Direct Wales Involves
HomeCare Direct Wales · 3 min read · Updated:

People weighing up a move into care want plain answers to three questions. What will I be paid? What training do I get? Is there anywhere to go from here? Care as a sector has a reputation problem on all three, often deservedly. Here is how the role works with us.
Proper employment, not gig work
Every PA who joins us is employed on a permanent contract with holiday pay, sick pay and a pension. No zero-hours arrangements, and none of the "self-employed" set-ups that quietly transfer the risk to you. Payroll, insurance, HR and cover are all handled by us, so the infrastructure of a real employer sits behind every package.
Because you support one person rather than a run of fifteen-minute calls, your hours are structured and predictable. They are agreed around the client's routine, which means you can plan your life, your childcare and your budget around them.
Pay is agreed per package and reflects the skill level involved. Complex clinical packages are skilled work, and they are paid as such. We would rather you ask us directly about the rate for a specific role than read a number here that may not match your package. When you speak to us about a role, you get a straight answer on the rate.
Training built around your client
Generic e-learning has its place, but it does not prepare you to support a real person. Our training is tailored to the individual you will work with: their needs, their equipment, their routines and their emergency protocols. It is delivered to Care Inspectorate Wales standards.
Clinical tasks come up often in complex packages. Where they do, our nurses train you and formally assess your competency before anything is delegated. Ventilation support, tracheostomy care, PEG feeding, emergency seizure medication: each is taught properly, signed off individually, and reviewed on an ongoing basis. You are never left holding clinical responsibility alone. The nursing team stays accountable and reachable throughout.
This structure is the answer to "but I've never worked in care." Plenty of our PAs come from other walks of life, and many are career changers. You are not expected to arrive skilled. You are expected to arrive right for the client, and to leave every training milestone genuinely competent.
Where it goes from here
Progression in care should not mean leaving the person you support. With us it can mean deepening clinical competencies on complex packages, mentoring newer PAs as teams grow, or taking formal qualifications as your experience builds. Skills signed off by nurses on real packages carry weight that certificates alone do not, and they travel with you.
Clients choose their own teams, so the fit works both ways. PAs join packages where they were wanted. That single fact is a large part of why our teams stay together, and why the work stays rewarding.
