You don't need a care background to become a Personal Assistant. Ask the people who join us where they worked before and you'll hear the whole high street: retail managers, hospitality staff, hairdressers, office administrators, delivery drivers. Very few grew up planning a career in care, and almost none of them would go back.

If you're somewhere in the middle of an “is this it?” moment about your own work, here's an honest picture of what changing career to Personal Assistant work actually involves.

The skills that transfer are the ones that matter

People assume care work needs a care background. What it actually needs is the thing good retail, hospitality and service people already do every day: noticing what someone needs, often before they say it, and responding with patience and warmth. On the tenth time exactly as on the first.

Reliability, calm under pressure, reading a room, keeping going on a hard day. If you've done shift work with the public, you have more relevant experience than you think. The clinical side, and in our packages there often is one, is what training is for.

What's different about PA work

A Personal Assistant does not do agency care work, visiting fifteen strangers a day on a rota you found out about last night. As a PA you support one person, consistently, in their own home and community. You know them; they chose you. You see the same person on Monday that you saw on Friday, and the relationship builds over time. That is exactly why families value it, and why the work feels meaningful in a way a checkout or a stockroom rarely did.

With The HCD Model, the person you support (or their family) selects their own team. So from your first shift you're somewhere you were wanted, not somewhere you were sent.

A real job, properly backed

Joining us means a permanent contract with holiday pay, sick pay and a pension. Not a zero-hours arrangement, and not self-employment dressed up as flexibility. Training is tailored to the specific person you'll support and delivered to Care Inspectorate Wales standards. Where clinical tasks are involved, our nurses train you, formally assess your competency, and stay involved. You're never the most qualified person responsible for a clinical decision; there's always a nursing team behind you.
